Amazon combats fake book reviews with $50 minimum spend

Book reviews on Amazon over the years have attracted more scams than can possibly be imagined. Most revolve around click farms and amassing lots of Amazon accounts.

By creating hundreds, if not thousands of Amazon accounts, scammers could boost free Kindle ebook downloads, add customer reviews, or manipulate book sales ranking.

There have been many, many articles written about problems associated with Amazon customer reviews in relation to ebook reviews in particular. There has also been manipulation of Kindle ebooks, as Let’s Get Digital explains how Scammers Broke the Kindle Store.

At the same time, Amazon has tried to resolve these problems in a number of ways.

    I was able to get Amazon to reinstate one of my deleted reviews. but another was deleted because? I guess, because she was an author & we know each other.
    I didn’t review her book so it wasn’t a review exchange. It’s very frustrating when an author works so hard & then has reviews removed.
    On the other hand, I saw one book getting hundreds of reviews every hour. Amazon did not delete a single one of those!

I have no doubt the scammers will find ways of getting around Amazon’s new threshold – it’ll no doubt reduce them for a while, but scammers seem unerringly able to work their way around any obstacle and I expect some other loophole will soon become evident to them by which they can manipulate the system. As always, they make life ever more difficult for honest people. Sigh…

  5. Interesting knowledge, Chris.
    Now I wonder, how they react worldwide. I have a shop at amazon.com and I do often shop at amazon.de and amazon.co.uk and amazon.es. So I place my money in different countries at Amazon. How will they calculate this?
