    Now here’s a conundrum, I’m struggling with. Has anyone advice on when to capitalise a profession?
    I think this is right… The teacher wanted everyone to stand in line (lower case).
    And this is right… Police Inspector Jones of the Yard (upper case because it’s a title with a name like Doctor Jones).

    But what happens in direct speech when you are writing a story?
    ‘I suspected Miss Marple!’ said the inspector loudly.
    Is that a capital ‘I’ or not? You are talking about a specific person but not referring to them by name. It would be capitalised if you wrote – said Inspector Jones loudly.
    If it is capitalised then what happens when later in the passage when you say:. The inspector picked up the bloodied murder weapon.
    Is that a capitalised because you are talking about the same inspector (Inspector Jones) as opposed to a general member of the profession. Although you haven’t mentioned her/his surname, it is clear to the reader you are talking about the same specific person.

    it would be really helpful if anyone could offer a simple concise explanation. Or it would just be nice to hear people’s points of view.
