That does sound very top end pricing. I emloy a professional editor and book cover creator and I would say I spend $1,000 tops but it includes doing some stuff inhouse.

Since there are costs associated with self-publishing, the smart thing to do is to start setting money aside on a monthly schedule. If you started this when you started writing your book, by the time you were ready for editing, formatting, and a cover, you’d probably already have the funds set aside. If you don’t save up ahead of time, these costs can appear daunting and overwhelming, and encourage you to skip professional help! 😦

It appears that sustaining an indie author career is going to cost ever higher, at least if you’re pursuing a professional career. Looks like indie author career handle professionally will increasingly look like traditionall publishing.
Besides, even on the side of marketing, many services that used to be free are now turnign to paying, like for example RebelMouse and Tailwind.
But then, I suppose this will make indie publishing more of a profession and less of a hobby.

Note that the costs here don’t include promotion or advertising. And yet we hear that even the best written, edited and presented books will fail to attract attention on their own.

I’m not really to that point yet, but I explore pub. formats and tasks meanwhile. It’s good to have a ballpark, should I go indie (which is where I am leaning).

Maybe it’s a UK to US/Washington State thing because it sure isn’t working for me, no matter how many times I try. Blah. I wanted to see the costs. I’d post a screen shot of what I’m seeing if WordPress comments let me post photos.
