Maps, to me, are a vital part of fuelling the sense of wonder that drives people to read the fantasy book. It’s what got me into Tolkien, and I’ve never looked back from that. Square mountain ranges and all.

I’m a sucker for books with maps! As everybody knows, each book in my termite series has a map, and I used colored versions on the back cover for five of them.

Did you make the maps before, during or after writing the stories Lorinda? 🐵

I made a large map before I started writing – it covered the whole world, except the western region at the end of the world. But it was too big so I broke it into sections for each volume. I pretty much drew all the geographical features but left off the route of the Quest because I never was sure exactly what way they were going!

But it gave you a good idea what the world was like; did you fill in the landmark names a you wrote? 🐵

You know, I can’t remember exactly how I did it! I know the maps got edited a lot as I was writing. I would have had to wait to fill in the place names until I fabricated them.
