I’m glad so many of you had so much fun rising to the 79 Word Challenge set by Author Andrew Joyce.

However, it seems to be time to finalise the challenge and thank everyone who participated.

The insistent stab of the alarm drags me from sleep.

I smack my fingers against the off button.

Merciful silence.

It can’t be morning already.

Ahead, another long day at the office.

I peer into an inky void.

Skin, sweaty, warm.

Fumbling for the lamp, I click it on.

Darkness remains, heavy.

Skin chills, gooseflesh.

Gasping for air, fighting mounting panic, I reach for my glasses.

The gloom doesn’t lift.

With a sickening thud, I know it never will.

We watched the last sunrise.

Colors of scarlet, cobalt, cherry, yellow gold, violet, and orange filled the horizon, but in one spot, a pure white blinding light rose.

We shielded our eyes and waited for the impact.

His arms around me, I didn’t cry.

There’s no reason for tears, now.

We watched for as long as we could then closed our eyes and waited. Would death truly be the end?

The words I love you would be our last.
