Are you looking for entertaining children’s books with subtle life lessons?

I’m the author of five of them.

All of my books promote positive messages for children.

The first is an award-winning autobiography called Tails of Sweetbrier.

It’s the story of a little girl with a big dream.

She wanted to become a champion horseback rider.

Does that sound like it would be hard to accomplish?

In this case it was not so easy because I was born with cerebral palsy.

My parents were mortified when a specialist told my Dad I would never walk. My Dad stormed out of the office, after he had told the doctor exactly where he could go with that advice.

I still remember my Dad telling me that just because the doctor said that, it doesn’t make it true.

He and I set out to prove the doctor wrong.

Fortunately, my parents instilled in me that anything was possible, as long as I didn’t quit.

Actually, the family motto was “The Humphrys don’t give up.”

We had days when all I did was fall off and get up.

Definitely not much fun, but I figured if I tried hard enough and never gave up, I’d prevail.

My goal was not to make the book Tails of Sweetbrier seem like it was all about me, so I wrote it as if I was talking to the reader.

My thoughts and advice is woven into the plot to keep readers engaged.

Here is the opening statement from Tails of Sweetbrier:

“Have you ever really wanted to do something, but you came across a roadblock of some kind? Maybe you’re afraid of new things, or maybe you have a physical challenge of some kind. Are you going to follow your dream or are you going to push it aside without even trying?”

To this point in my writing career, my most exciting moment was when Tails of Sweetbrier won the silver medal in The Feathered Quill Book Awards last year.

It was also a finalist in the CLIPPA contest.

In case you’re wondering if I always wanted to be an author, the answer is no. My parents always encouraged me, even when I was little. But I thought that was the silliest idea I’d ever heard! I never had the confidence to try writing. But one day I had a strong intuition to write a story about life at Sweetbrier so that children would be inspired to reach for their dreams.

That was the beginning of my writing career.
