Applies to ALL Authors – NOT just those who write for children…
Schools visits are magical…most of the time. My very first school visit started with technology issues. After struggling for half an hour, I decided to give my presentation without slides. At that point, of course, the presentation suddenly started working! Talk about stressful. But in the end, it’s your connection with the kids that matters. How do we inspire and encourage kids during our school visits?
I thought through this question as I recently prepared for my visit to St. Augustine’s school, where I spent the day leading workshops for K-8, pictured here. There are the three basic rules that work for me. I share personal experiences, get the kids involved, and use questions.

I’ve not yet done school visits, but I have done a couple of visits to young adult reading groups at libraries in my area.I’ve been lucky in that I’ve had some great groups of teenagers, all of whom had loads of questions and were happy to talk for the hour that we had – it could so easily have gone the other way. But I think if you’re willing to laugh and have fun with it, you can hopefully engage and make that connection so they remember you. I also handed out promo cards for my upcoming book (YA), and they seemed to be received pretty well, so will see how it goes 🙂

We’ve had some amazing author visits, and some dire ones too… It’s so true, you, the author can inspire a young person out there… A possible best seller in the making… It’s so important to make the children realise you don’t have to be Einstein to write, or Shakespeare… But that their words could have as much of an impact as JK Rowling, or Julia Donaldson, say… Who knows unless you try!
