on Writers Helping Writers:

Last fall, when I wrote about writing a novel “scene by scene” as someone neurodivergent, I received a ton of interesting feedback. Most of it was a variation on these three questions:
- How can you possibly write out of order?
- How can you keep things straight when you write like that?
- I get hives even thinking about writing out of order!
I’ll give you my answer in a nutshell.
I’ve written books out of order. It worked for grabbing scenes while they were still sizzling on the brain — but it made editing very difficult, and keeping to any timeline even worse.
Although I know it works very well for some people. Fannie Flagg, famous for “Fried Green Tomatoes” said she wrote the entire book, scene at a time, but not necessarily in order. When she got ready to edit, she pinned the various scenes onto a clothesline she strung across the room. 😀 Hugs
