“Be aware of every Minute of the day, you will never see that one again”.

When I saw that sentence in a reminder from FB, I was reminded that I was watching all day TV and wasting my precious time.

When I was diagnosed with cancer the first time in 1993, and after radiation, was burned for life, I did my duties as a wife and a mum for our newly adopted twin girls, but in my head I was thinking, okay in 2 years I am gone.

While my husband was working all day and the girls were in school, I watched all day TV.

I was just vegetating around, didn’t face life at all.

Didn’t want to.

I was crawling into a black hole, or into the shell of a turtle.

I heard that the other two ladies who were undergoing treatment with me at that time, had died. But finding myself still alive after the predicted 2 years, I came to my senses as if I was waking up from a dream, I looked around and here I was, still among the living.

Because of being burned by the radiation I have a lot of pain and could not go back to work. So, my husband bought me a computer and taught me how to use it to write. He thought that I might be able to write, since he wrote the story of our adopting the girls. And he knew that I had written stories about animals in my earlier years.

But then came the question, in German or in English?

I decided to write in English because we live in an English speaking country.

I started to write short animal stories. It was fun. I loved it. Even though my English wasn’t actually good enough for it. But I did it anyway. And to top it all, I was so bold and sent them in for a competition. Yes, I did. And guess what. I didn’t get a prize, but was highly commended, and told that I am on the right path.

That really inspired me to go on.

One of the short stories was about Matica and Talon. A year later, I thought I could develop that story into a book and later into a series, so the Talon books came to life.

Today I could not watch all day TV as I used to do. It was a different time.

Nowadays I go into and enjoy my garden and flowers and always do some weeding between.

We go out for day tours, or even for 2 or 3 weeks holiday, even going window shopping in shopping centres. When I can’t go out because of rain, as it did the last few weeks, I read a lot and played solitaire on the computer or phone, just to keep my brain active. The TV goes on only for the News and then we watch a movie before bed.

Thank you for reading my story. I appreciate it very much. I have never done anything like that before, because I couldn’t, I didn’t know how to write it. But as I learn more to express myself, it comes more easily.

That is one of the reasons I have written the story of Matica. I could write it, but I could never talk about it. My inner soul is in Matica.

Okay, the End, for now. Love you all who are reading this.
