When writers finally get that long-awaited offer of publication, their first reaction is jubilation, rapidly followed by “Yes, yes, a thousand time YES!!!”

But with contracts, as with marriage proposals, it’s better to step back before making a commitment, because divorces are long, messy, emotionally draining affairs.
