What is Kindle Vella? And Should You Join as an Author?
Amazon announced the launch of the new Kindle Vella program in April 2021, a few months before actually making it available to readers — already pre-loaded with hundreds of stories from authors.
Kindle Vella is Amazon’s foray into the “serialization market,” currently dominated by established apps such as Wattpad or Radish, and with a readership consisting mostly of young readers. So how is Kindle Vella different, and what opportunities does it offer authors? That’s what we’ll uncover in this post.

Medium’s paid content only applies to those authors that ‘join’ up. The idea is that these authors are both curated and promoted. That said, I believe you can still read unpaid authors without a paid membership. Plus each article is complete in itself. It is also aimed at an adult readership.
By contrast, Vella sounds like KU aimed at teens and young adults [like Wattpad]. If you don’t write for that market you won’t get either exposure or money. 😦

I still use WordPress for most of my blogging but I do have a presence on Medium, and I follow many of their political and tech articles – they’re very good. 🙂

Thanks for sharing this, Chris. The article is a well composed breakdown of Amazon’s published information. It brings out a lot of important info about payment structure that I completely missed when I was looking into this.
In other words, don’t do this if you expect to get any payment at all… (Eye roll).
However, it might still be good exposure — and to a completely different reader base.
I’ve been trying to get a story together for this. With the exposure reasoning in mind I guess I’ll still give it a try. However the payment issue is hugely disappointing.
