I agree with this post. Readers want something for nothing. $1.99 for a book that has taken months of blood, sweat and tears to produce? Ridiculous. And that’s the full price! Unknown authors can’t charge more than this or people won’t buy, and even this is a ridiculous price.
I know many people who won’t buy a book unless it’s on offer or free. It’s taking advantage of people who love what they are doing, and would do it anyway.
And my local supermarket has started a ‘book swap’. (perhaps others have too). You take a book you want to read from the box, and replace it with one you’ve finished with. Great for the public, but those authors aren’t getting anything from all the people who take part and read books ‘for free’. (The same goes for second-hand book shops, I suppose. No payment to the writer.) Would you expect any other career to work for nothing? But writers are fair game, it seems.
