Five Things I’ve Learned as a Writer – Guest Post by Traci Kenworth…

I’ve been writing since I was old enough to discover books. Some of you may not know but I was serious about being a writer at the age of eighteen but then an abusive marriage cranked into the works and many dark years later, I started over, determined to follow my dreams again. Here’s what I’ve learned.

  1. If someone doesn’t believe in you, they’re not quite worth ruining your life over. I have a new support group now in my kids, my family, my friends, my crit partners, and the bloggers I’ve met along the way. Not to mention, one day, I can finally add readers to that list.
  2. It takes as many drafts as it does. First drafts are messy unless you edit as you go along. I try not to. Yes, I do a lot of rewriting, but each draft makes it that more polished than before. Sometimes the story that chips away, isn’t the one you started with, sometimes it’s better.
  3. Help others out. When it comes your turn, they just might be willing to return the favor. Not all will, of course but even if just a few tweets about your work, mention you in passing, it pulls other’s along for the ride.
  4. Try to not make enemies. Life’s too short to spend it fighting. Violence is not a good thing to live with. After the nightmare of what me and the kids went through with my ex, it is truly a blessing to be able to live with peace. This does not mean you ignore threats, but that you do your best to not stir the pot, so to speak.
  5. Just when you think it’s too late to follow your dreams, you find a new wind to work with. You push on, keep at the writing. It’s the only way to become a success. You have to give it time and patience. Even in those times that I felt like quitting, I remember all that I’ve been through. Things will come to pass if I continue to move forward.

  1. I so admire you for sharing this with us, Traci. I especially believe in number 3. When I first came to the blogging world, I was amazed by just how much free help and support there was. I’d never have gone on to publish my book if it had not been for all the support and encouragement I got from the blogging community. It’s an amazing community full of wonderful people.
