I’m so excited to get invited back, Chris. I love the jungle, and probably ought to get some cool jungle girl outfit eventually. Like the host said, I’m Lisa Burton, the robot girl, and one of my duties as Craig’s spokesmodel is to help promote his books.

This time, the book is called The Enhanced League. It has a tiny bit of science fiction background, but the stories are human ones. Oh yeah, I should mention this is a collection of short stories that serve to tell an overall story.

It’s about a fictional professional baseball league where nobody cares about performance enhancing drugs. The league is big on flash and spectacle and is a bit more like professional wrestling in that regard.

Like in wrestling, there are some pretty flashy women involved. They have their ring girls and managers, The Enhanced League has its umpire corp. These women are umpires in every sense of the word, and it’s a big step for women. Of course it also comes with a down side.

The women are expected to be icons of beauty, and are dressed in some pretty outrageous outfits. Or awesome, depending on your point of view. They pose for the league calendars, and make public appearances to promote the league.

Sadly, if women were to make such a big leap it would probably happen just about like this.

It’s no big deal if a woman wants to dress provocatively and pose for calendar shots. It’s a little different when it’s part of her employment. Still, these are strong women and they appear to have their heads on straight. They’ve made big strides in what was formerly a man’s world, and they do important work.

To celebrate these women, I posed for my own umpire image and brought you this poster.

This is me making a call at home plate. We chose to honor an older style of cheesecake art, so the dust is just hinted at, and there are some line drawings to indicate various umpiring calls. Feel free to set it as your iPad background, or whatever you like.

The Enhanced League is about more than the umpires, of course. There is the game itself, plus some business maneuvers that take place off the field. Craig even added something new that he calls Anthems. These are little bits about baseball that are almost like spoken word poetry. They enhance the overall feeling of the sport. See what I did there with the word enhance?

The Enhanced league is a collection of short stories and anthems centered around a year in a fictional baseball league. It has a slight science fiction background. This league has a lot more pomp than you might be used to, and nobody seems to care if the players use performance enhancing drugs.

Stories involve existing heroes, up and comers, and falling stars. While there are the obvious stories that take place on the field of play, there are also human interest stories that take place around the baseball gyrations. These stories involve scouting, trades, ruthless business decisions, and even relationships.

I was born in a town called Elko, Nevada. I like to tell everyone I was born in a small town in the 1940s. I’m not quite that old, but Elko has always been a little behind the times. This gives me a unique perspective of earlier times, and other ways of getting by. Some of this bleeds through into my fiction.
