First I would like to thank Chris for hosting me today. My name is Steven Capps, and I am a fantasy writer who just moved from Illinois to Georgia. I have spent the last seven years of my life enlisted in the U.S. Army as an Infantryman.
While I still serve, I don’t think that the idea of a rugged military man accurately describes me.
If you could place Michael Cerra’s awkward Juno character as a background soldier in any war movie you would get Sergeant Capps.
I began writing during an extremely low point of my life. I had just found out that my wife at the time (ex-wife now) had been having an affair with our roommate. To help distract myself, I began reading for the first time since high school.
I picked up Brandon Sanderson’s The Way of Kings and connected so strongly to his character Kaladin that it really helped me cope with my emotional pain.
After reading his book, I decided that I wanted to be able to help someone in the same way that Sanderson had helped me. I began writing my first novel, (which was crap) and discovered that this is what I wanted to do with the rest of my life.
Three years later, I am still writing and still improving.
I regularly write about the craft of writing on my blog,
I have published the creative nonfiction short story, “Eevee” in the quarterly literary magazine The Bird & Dog, my fantasy short story, “Lux Nauta” earned an Honorable Mention in L. Ron Hubbard’s Writers of the Future contest, (3rd quarter, 2016) and I am currently working through a major rewrite on a manuscript called Silver & Shadow (Working Title).

Thank you so much! I was just checking out your blog, and I saw you had the “No Award Zone” graphic on the side of your page. If you do not mind me asking, what exactly is that about?
