A character in one of my works-in-progress right now is an English knight from the early 1400s.
Because of that, I’ve been doing a lot of research about England in the late Middle Ages, just so I can understand what he does and doesn’t understand about the modern world.
I know lots of writers of sword-and-sorcery fantasy study of medieval England, too!
I’ve learned that some things I believed about the Middle Ages, because I’d heard them said a bunch of times, weren’t true at all.
Great post – I jumped across and commented. I did university courses on the medieval period, way back when, and still recall being told something curious. We call it the ‘medieval’ period or the ‘middle ages’ – but that term didn’t become common until well after they were over. At the time nobody went around saying ‘we live in the middle period’. They might have said things like ‘you don’t vote for kings’ or ‘I’m not old, I’m thirty seven’, but that’s another story…

Perhaps someday our present time will be called the Middle Ages, or later Middle Ages, or even The Second Dark Ages Matthew 🐵

Ya know.. I have a friend who married a fella with the last name of England. I always thought she missed a golden opportunity or two by NOT naming two of her kids. Medieval and London.. just sayin
