How should I introduce myself? I’m not sure where to start, so how about I start with my indecision? I love sunny days and I love rainy days. I feel young and I feel old and I’ll laugh and laugh, but I too am prone to moments of silence and sadness. I’ll be consumed by waves of creativity, spending weeks as a prisoner of one form of art or another, and then suddenly I’ll drop it and run for the outdoors. I’ll bike or swim, hike, or even camp to feel alive and then slowly make my way back to a more mundane existence. I am a homebody and a traveler; one day I will work tirelessly to make a healthy, raw, vegan meal, and the next day I’ll wash down some greasy fries with a soy latte laced with artificial syrups.
However, my love for life―all life―is absolute. I believe in equal rights for everyone regardless of race, gender, culture, and whether they are part of the LGBT+ community or not, and I also believe in animal rights. So it’s not surprising that I wrote a series of books that explore a fictional society’s division on magical creatures from two very different perspectives. The first is that of an ageless vampire who is arrogant, rich, privileged, and highly intelligent, while the other is an effervescent and energetic artist who has had a surprising amount of tragedy in her life. It is through their eyes that we enter a new Toronto and the life of a paranormal investigator named Docherty.
Despite how serious this introduction may seem, I assure you, the books are not. I kill people, joke about it, and then distract you with pixies. I live for fantasy, for magic, and for possibility. When I’m sitting on a train or I’m the passenger in a car, I look out and see the world as I would like it to be: full of elves, satyrs, and werewolves. A world where the handsome stranger on the train is a vampire on his way to work; where a pegasus may graze in a field along the highway; and where vendors sell protective amulets, money charms, and herbal remedies alongside newspapers and candy bars.
At home I keep myself busy by putting my overactive imagination to work through both writing and artwork. While I dabble in a bit of everything, my preferred mediums are watercolor, colored pencil, acrylic, and polymer clays. In fact, the majority of the time I have two or three projects on the go while working on my next novel. My inability to focus on one thing at a time often means everything takes forever, but it eventually gets done. I’d rather embrace all of my passions at once than give any of them up. If I’m really on the ball, I’ll create art specifically for my books and fandom, but being a part of other fandoms myself, I tend to be all over the map.
Not surprising I am a fan of Harry Potter, The Hobbit and LOTR, The Last Unicorn, My Little Pony, and Game of Thrones, but I am also a fan of the Dragonriders of Pern series, Dragonlance, Supernatural, the works of Charles de Lint, Patricia Briggs, and the Vampire Hunter D animated movies and books. I am also an X-Men geek, a fan of both Star Trek and Star Wars (I’m a sick, sick hybrid, I know), Rick and Morty, Spiderman, and Jessica Jones, and the list could go on until I’ve written another introduction entirely.
It goes without saying that the fandoms I grew up with and participate in now have heavily influenced my life and writing, and I hope that my fellow science fiction and fantasy lovers will also immerse themselves in my world and its many characters. So if you do happen to give Detective Docherty and the Demon’s Tears a read, I hope you enjoy it as I have enjoyed the movies, books, and shows that inspire me. I also hope that the next time you open your eyes and look at the world, that instead of seeing it as is, you will picture how it could be.
