I catch much more, doing this, than merely reading it… I have to engage my mind by reading it aloud, because if I don’t, I will be easily distracted.

I have edited copy for, well, more years than I care to disclose at this point. This is one of the best self-editing techniques. I’m constantly telling my writing students to do this. IF you feel foolish, read it to your pet.:-)

Chris, so true. In fact, I wrote one whole chapter of my book The Gift of Memoir about the benefits of reading aloud. It can be quite emotional because experiences seem more alive when you feel the words vibrating in the bones of your throat, chest and the three tiny bones in the inner ear.
