As an author and full-time editor, Iām coming across more and more writers who donāt read their own genre, orāeven worseādonāt read at all. There are generally two types of these writers.

2. Writers who havenāt read anything since they left high school twenty years ago.
Spoiler Alert: Neither of these options is okay.
Writers, please, oh please, you must readāand you must read often, especially in your own genre. As the infamous Stephen King once said, āIf you donāt have time to read, you donāt have the time (or the tools) to write.ā I adamantly agree with him.

I once came across a writer who wanted critiques and reviews of his book, but would not return the favour as he didn’t like reading and had no time for it. It was in a writers group on Google+. I can’t imagine wanting to write a book if you don’t like to read. Reading is essential for all writers!

I find it really hard to get enthusiastic about reading, except for the Classics and a few choice books I go back to every now and then. I suppose I should make more of an effort…

It’s worth the effort Lucy – Apart from the classics, my favourite is Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series š

Oh yes I have read Pratchett of course! And I used to read a lot of crime fiction. Now I prefer non-fiction, though, but I suppose fiction would be more suitable.
