Not for the reason you might think. When I managed to locate some old college and even high school stories I was amazed at how well they read before attending law school and working in local government writing memos and reports. It took a few years to be able write simple declarative sentences, concisely constructed and with decent imagery–not to mention dialogue. Now what I write does of course surpass the early days but the face is for the middle years.

I actually look a lot worse when I reread old academic papers and poetry. I look more like animal from the Muppets who just drank lemon juice… straight up!
