Zoe and Tom
Hello to my fans and friends! This is Zoe the Fabulous Feline, and the story I’m about to tell you is true.
Those who know me know that I used to be a strictly indoor cat. A few months back, I snuck out of the house and that’s when I met Bella, a dog I initially thought was a wolf and who is now a dear, sweet friend. Bella and I have gone on several road trips together since then, and have always had great adventures!
Sad to say, I have not seen Bella for a while. Her family went south for the winter and I will not see her again until she comes home in the spring. I miss her! And with my best friend not around, I got real bored real fast. So, yesterday I snuck outside and roamed the streets in search of an adventure.
I wonder what Bella is doing right now? Probably rolling around on a lush, green lawn with some southern canine belle or maybe even a little-but-fierce feline like me. Maybe she’s running through a sprinkler to keep cool and . . . BEEP! BEEP-BEEP—BEEEEEEEP!
The noise startled me. It happened so fast; at the moment that I realized a truck was about to hit me, I jumped out of the way. Or did I? I could have sworn I felt a push and heard “Woof!” It was very faint, but I heard it. And I know this will be hard to believe, but it sounded like Bella! I ran around looking for her but she was nowhere to be seen. I shrugged it off because what else could I do? I went on my way, continuing my search for adventure.
Suddenly, a big, brown bird flew right over my head. It was flying so low that I could have stood up on my hind legs and touched its belly. It was flapping its wings furiously and making quite a racket until it landed on the corner and just stood there quietly, as if resting.
I raced up to it. Maybe I would at least make a new friend before the day was over; that would be an adventure, something I could tell Bella about when she got home. I went right up to the bird and introduced myself. “My name is Zoe, and I’m looking for an adventure. Want to join me?”
“Hi, Zoe. My name is Tom, and I just had an adventure . . . one with enough excitement to last me a lifetime, thank you very much. Several young humans back there were chasing me and yelling something about “thanksgiving.” I barely got away from them with all my tail feathers intact. So if it’s all the same to you, I think I’ll just go home. My friends and I live in the brush down by the lake. Maybe we can get together for dinner some night?”

I hid my disappointment. There would be no adventure for me this day. “Sure, Tom. I guess it’s about time for me to go home, too.”
Since that little road trip, I’ve stayed indoors, thinking about Bella and Tom, wondering what they were up to, but I was far from bored. You see, shortly after I’d met Tom, our house became abuzz with activity; all the comings and goings kept me quite entertained. Then one morning, aromas coming from the kitchen got my curiosity up—the food smells were to die for! Soon, the family started to arrive. They gathered in the dining room, and the chattering was almost intolerable.
I was just about to go back to bed to get away from it all, when out of the kitchen came my human, carrying a large platter in her hands. As she reverently laid it down in the center of the dining room table, she told the family, “This is the best turkey I’ve ever seen! So plump and juicy. And look at how nice and crispy Tom browned up!
I remember thinking, just before I fainted, I don’t think this is what Tom had in mind when he said we’d get together for dinner.

When I came to, I went on Emily’s computer and did a search on turkeys. I wanted to learn if they could fly. Turns out that only wild turkeys can fly and that they usually fly low to the ground. I also read that the turkeys humans eat cannot fly.

Whew! Maybe I will see my new friend, Tom the Wild Turkey, again one day after all!

Hi, Princess Aurora! My apologies for this late reply. My human has been hogging the computer! You are right about friends, and I am sure I will have more adventures with Bella, as long as her humans don’t make FL their new permanent home. That would make me sad…so sad I think I would move there too. I cannot imagine never hanging out with her again!

I loved reading about your adventure, Zoe! I shared it on all my pages. You’re a good writer. Thank goodness Tom is safe. And before you know it, it’ll be spring and Bella will return. Then look out, world! 🙂

You had an exciting adventure, Zoe, but you need to be very careful of those big things on four wheels! You could have been looking down on Bella from heaven, if it hadn’t been for her timely and miraculous intervention. Keep an eye out for Tom. We have some of his relatives here on our land, but we would never think of eating them. One of the things wild turkeys have working for them is that they are NOT good eating!

Dear Noelle, yes, you’re so right. Heaven is, I’m sure, a lovely place but I would much rather be still “here” playing with Bella than “there” looking down at her! And I can’t wait to introduce her to Tom–what adventures we will have!!
