What Are People Reading in the Bathroom, and Should You?

Every day, the average person spends about half an hour in the bathroom. About one third of women admit to spending an hour or more per day in the bathroom. What are people doing in there? For the most part, they are reading. In fact, nearly two thirds of people claim to read books, newspapers or magazines while on the toilet.

On the other hand, about three quarters of people have used their phone in the bathroom, and almost a quarter of people say that they will not go to the bathroom without stopping to grab their phone first. For what? Two thirds of people are texting. The surprising figure is that over 60 percent of people say they will take a call in the bathroom. Another surprising figure is that less than 30 percent are willing to use social networking while on the toilet.

While women read in the bathroom, most women also read elsewhere and only do a small portion of their reading on the toilet. For men, however, over 85 percent say that is where they get the majority of their reading done.

But is hanging out in the bathroom to read good for you? Maybe not. Sitting on the toilet too long can create pressure that results in hemorrhoids. Also, while magazines and newspapers stay fairly germ free, smartphones and tablets will pick up tons of microbes in a bathroom. If you use yours on the toilet, get some antibacterial screen cleaner.
