  1. Hello,Chris.

Thanks for posting. This is all news to me. My WP.com blog is about 18 months old, so I hadn’t considered backing it up. I back up my own writing/books, but never considered the WP blog at risk (I guess I believed it was “in the cloud” and therefore impervious to loss).

So, I followed your and WP’s directions and got to this point with WP:
“Import WordPress Processing…We’re processing your import now and will send you an email when it’s all done. If you don’t hear from us within 24 hours, please contact support, and we’ll get everything fixed.”

Also, the file this message, above, is referring to gives me this message (on the same page as the directions as to what to do after the file I exported according to your instructions had been saved):
“This is a WordPress eXtended RSS file generated by WordPress as an export of your site. It contains information about your site’s posts, pages, comments, categories, and other content. You may use this file to transfer that content from one site to another. This file is not intended to serve as a complete backup of your site.”

So, what is the file WP is importing actually importing if it’s not all my content? After it’s finished and it sends me this email, what/where is my content “backed up” to, exactly? How much of it?

    I’m flummoxed.

Anyone who can explain all this in layperson’s terms and what I need to do actually to have my WP.com blog’s contents, pages, etc., backed up from beginning to now and then how to keep doing it without doing ALL of it each time, please send me an email? Sallyember AT yahoo DOT com

    Thanks!

  2. I got a 1 terabyte external for about $60. All my book and narration stuff is on there and I STILL have panic attacks about it!. Maybe I should start keeping it in DropBox as well? Thanks for the reminder, Chris! I’ll definitely try this for my blog. ♥

  3. Reblogged this on chrismcmullen and commented:
Wouldn’t you just hate it if one day you woke up and all your WordPress posts had vanished? You don’t have to worry. Take a minute to backup your blog (all your hard work, blood, sweat, and tears), following the simple step-by-step instructions at the Storyreading Ape’s blog. It could be a life-saver. 🙂
