  1. I think the world of books for boys has expanded greatly since my sons were young. With the Harry Potter series for elementary age, and The Hunger Games, and many other dystopian books available for junior high reading, there is plenty of reading material out there. My grandson is an avid reader and never has any problem finding reading material. It doesn’t matter whether it is aimed at boys or both boys and girls, the material is growing every day. I think the education system still pushes books that appeal to girls over those for boys.

  2. Not fond of gatekeepers mostly. I remember all the hoo hah about Noddy and Big Ears, and I used to have to hide my Enid Blytons because my mother thought that they’d encourage me to go on weird adventures (never needed any encouragement – little did she know) – do you reckon this is true Chris? It would be a shame if it is.

    • I think it’s someone stirring a pot that doesn’t need it – and raising the modern buzzword spectre of Boys and Girls being segregated in their Education, upbringing and now, the type of stories they read.
Most girls I’ve ever know have a bit of tomboy in them and a lot of boys (although they may not admit it) would like to do girlish things (Action Man Dolls?)
Personally, I’m just glad that SOMEONE is in charge of getting stories out.
We live in a Political Correctness World gone Mad – but then, I’m from a completely different generation from you and many others now in charge of things 😀

  3. I actually read this article in The Times some days back: it does seem that the world of literary agents/publishers (for kids or not) has a lot of ladies working in it, though whether that’s good/bad/neutral I couldn’t say…

    • I don’t know either Random – I’ve been reading a lot of Children’s books by both men and women and find them all entertaining – I think :Dit’s the old argument about are we, as a society, partitioning boys and girls and thereby limiting their choices of eventual career?

  4. I wanted to read the whole piece, but they wouldn’t let me unless I signed up for a trial of “the Times”. Bummer- That! This is a subject I am very interested in. I try to write for boys and the girls come along anyway.
