Thank you Chris for this great post from Dan Koboldt. Forests are the most diverse of any setting an author can write about. I spent my adolescent years growing up exploring the Forest Preserve that was adjacent to our backyard. Knowing how to write about a forest means learning the complicity of a forest(s).

We have a lot of woods in Canada, although I’ve experienced them mostly in parks, on trails. I agree with all of these points, except the ones about hunting; haven’t done that.

Don’t hunt unless you intend (and NEED) to eat what you kill Audrey.

Absolutely. Responsible hunting and fishing for food is acceptable, but trophy hunting is abominable. We still have a government-sanctioned hunt for grizzly bears here in British Columbia that persists despite opposition by many, including native people who live in the area.

Sorry to be a spoilsport but I’m a country girl and used to live in Surrey (a woody county) and knew all 10.

I’ll bet that’s more than many other Surrey folks Lindsey 😀

Yeah, about half the county is beautiful countryside of fields, woods and rolling hills – the rest is commuter belt for London and property there is the third most expensive area in the country.
