Excerpt from a great article by Author Laurie Boris:
I joined Twitter in 2008. It looked like a fun way to connect with people and share blog posts.
I made a lot of mistakes at first — I got spammed, I got hacked, I got suspended…and then I got smarter. I stopped automatically following anyone who followed me.
I learned how to recognize the red flags that pretty much guaranteed the person behind the avatar (if it was indeed a person) had no interest in two-way communication.
Many things about Twitter have changed since then.
A lot of users have gotten savvier about Twitter etiquette since 2012 when I first posted about this topic, but I continue to heed a few basic signs (and a few new ones) before hitting the “follow” button.
Here’s why I’m still not following you:

Please, oh please follow me on Twitter. My life will not be complete until I get six followers. The sun will not shine, babies will cry at my pain, women will weep at my disappointment, crops will wither and die, tides will not flow until you follow me on Twitter. Please oh please, follow me on Twitter! Until then, I have no self-worth.

I was speaking to the world in general. But thank you, Chris. One more follower and I can shove off to Valhalla a happy man.

Thanks for sharing this interesting article Chris. I would comment on the original post, however, as comments are closed I will comment here. I also hate Truetwit with a passion. Its just anothor layer of burocracy and I have better things to do with my time than try and solve inaccessible Captcha! I also dislike auto-responders for the same reason identified by the author. Sometimes I go to check out a person and it says “x is blocked” and I haven’t got a clue what that means so I dont follow! Kevin

All valid reasons. I read about requests for me to follow. Keeping many of the same reasons in mind. If I have nothing in common or I see that it is a marketer I will not follow. No photo, no bio, no follow. :o)

One other I forgot to mention, when I see the like your post on every single thing I have posted and all done in less than two minutes when some of my stories are five thousand words. That is another no follow. :o)

There are times when I don’t know what to say in comments, so just leave a Like – but I understand your POV 🙂
