I NEED TO DO THIS…
A month ago, I was drowning in emails. My phone dinged with alerts. I had heart palpitations every time I tried to confront my out of control inbox. It was common for me to wake up to fifty (or more!) new emails every morning. After working all day, I’d come home to dozens of new emails. I couldn’t keep up and had a difficult time sorting the important, time-sensitive stuff from the fluff.
Today, things have changed. My inbox is manageable. New emails trickle in at a much slower pace. The stress associated with checking my email is gone.
How did I do it? By making a few, easy changes.
- I unsubscribed. I don’t do a lot of online ordering, but somehow I ended up on a ton of mailing lists. Most of the online stores who emailed me with special deals and sales offer the same ‘deal’ to everyone. There…

Oh, this is my life! I’m starting to make changes already, as I can’t keep up with everything and sometimes miss things I really wanted to see. Great article 🙂

It’s amazing how many people don’t bother with the simple “unsubscribe” method for keeping down emails. And rather than unfollow some blogs, I have them in my RSS feed instead of email.
For Facebook and LinkedIn notifications, I created a filter that diverts them into specific folders, which leaves my inbox relatively uncluttered. You could do the same for Pinterest or any other social media site that sends notifications (or opt out of the notifications completely!).
Great blog post, Tricia, and great decision to share, Chris! 😀

Thanks for that Susan – Perhaps you could send me a post on how to create your filters? 😀

I think it’s different for every account. On AOL, it’s under Mail Settings… And what? You want me to write MORE posts when I can’t hardly keep up with my own??? 😀

For others, just search “xxxx mail create filters” and replace “xxxx” with your email program name. 🙂

Thanks, Susan. I let my emails spiral out of control for months before I decided to unsubscribe. Now, I can’t believe I let it go for so long! On most social media sites, I’ve opted out of notifications altogether. I still get a few notifications for LinkedIn and Twitter. Twitter will be my next big project! Great idea about creating filters. I do that with my work emails. I need to do that with my personal Gmail account.
And thanks a bunch for sharing, Chris!
