Today I am going to share some eye-opening truths, which might shatter the illusions regarding the book publishing business and crush the dreams of some folk out there. I have recently come across a rather interesting blog post link in the comments section under a post at Suffolk Scribblings blog.

It was a rather grim post by author Kameron Hurley. For those who are not familiar with her, she is an established author who has been a finalist for the Arthur C. Clarke Award, the Hugo Award, the Nebula Award, the Locus Award and the BSFA Award for Best Novel. Her short fiction has appeared in prestigious SFF magazines such as Lightspeed, EscapePod, and Strange Horizons. Her fiction has been translated into Romanian, Swedish, Spanish, and Russian. She is also a graduate of Clarion West. Impressive credentials many of us dream about accomplishing some day, if ever.

  1. Book marketing/promotion is grueling work and can suck the joy out of writing. I think we all need to take a month off here and there simply to enjoy the experience of writing. Stepping away from a project periodically can add perspective and pave the way for new insights. Committing to endless drudgery at the expense of enjoying one’s craft is self-defeating. Book promotion is a long-term commitment that needs to be tempered with periods of abstinence. We need to come up for air intermittently and smell the roses ~ or go back to that bone hidden under the bed!

  2. Thanks for the reminder. Having recently published my debut novel, I am alternately amazed and unsurprised as to how much time is involved in marketing. Huge chunks of my day are spent keeping up with social media and looking for opportunities to spread the word about my book without spamming. Best of luck to Leona.

  3. Well reminded, Leona. Writing is a looooong haul journey made of invisible years spent winning one reader at the time until, automagically, one becomes an overnight success. Too many aspiring authors don’t understand that the “overnight” takes not less than a decade for most of us.
