Part of nomenclature, the study of proper names is called onomastics, a field which touches on linguistics, history, anthropology, psychology, sociology, philology, and much more.

There are several branches to onomastics:

  • Anthroponomastics is the study of personal names.
  • Literary onomastics researches the names in works of literature and other fiction.
  • Toponomastics is the study of place names.

  1. This COULD be a very interesting post. I went to the original post BIG DISAPPOINTMENT. I am fed up of blogs using minute fonts that expect readers to zoom their screen and pan from side to side to read it – so I haven’t bothered.
