This article is very helpful. I’m working on my first colonial America historical novel. Most of the characters are white, but one character is a free woman of color and another character is a black male slave. I have struggled to find their voices as I strive to be true to them. It has been a journey, but I think each draft has been an improvement over the previous one.
When it’s time to seek beta readers, I definitely want racially-diverse readers.
