One strategy that can help catapult your book to page one on Amazon results are your Amazon book reviews. Of course, your book needs to be categorized well on Amazon (with the right keywords and categories). It needs to be well-written, too! But after these “givens” reviews rock.

Great advice! Good comments too! 😉 ❤
Sherrie Miranda’s historically based, coming of age, Adventure novel “Secrets & Lies in El Salvador” is about an American girl in war-torn El Salvador: http://tinyurl.com/klxbt4y
Her husband made a video for her novel. He wrote the song too.

I like your idea of not reviewing books if you are not enthusiastic about them. It is helpful to get these glimpses of how Amazon’s algorithms might work… Thank you for writing and sharing this post.

Hi Chris,
Thank you for a great post. What is making my first book and killing my second is the reviews on Amazon. As much as I pleaded with my Facebook page and my Blog site, I got very few reviews with my second book. This strategy written here seems to apply to when the book is first released. Even when my sales continue on my first book, the reviews are lagging. Any suggestion from you or your followers on how to revitalize the reviews?
I bought your second book yesterday and read it right through. Wrote a review this morning, but it’s not up yet. I find that less (way less) than 1% of the people who buy my books give a review. Go figure. I loved your book, by the way.
Hi Andrew,
I can’t thank you enough for your great review. You are a great writer and even better storyteller and to have your approval is a great compliment. You are correct, most readers never even give a thought about leaving a review. I’m guilty of it myself, but I now do reviews more frequent than I had in the past.
I have found the best way to get reviews is through Goodreads. Once you are a member & have listed your book(s), you can go to GoodReviews & request a review on several of their sites. Leave your e-mail address & offer them a PDF or Mobi. Unfortunately, for me, I can’t read books on a screen (I spend too much time in front of a screen already!). But 99% of the GoodReview folks will accept an e-book which means no cost to you.
It’s always hard to get reviewers. Even very supportive people have not left reviews. Some even believe that they already wrote one when they haven’t!

P.S. It’s true about Amazon removing reviews by people they believe you are related to. I think they check FB because that’s the only place where I’ve been connected to people. I had to explain why a Salvadoran woman, who was an old friend of my sis-in-law, would give me a 5* review. It was about her country, for God’s sake! They did put that review back. They will also remove 1* reviews tho, if you complain & it looks like the people haven’t read it & are just being mean. (Yes, it’s hard to believe strangers would do that, but some will!)

Interesting, Chris, that the reviewer took a review lower than three stars down. I rarely finish a book I don’t enjoy so haven’t really given many reviews below 4 stars but people also do deserve your honest view and opinion.
Indeed they do, Robbie, however, like you, if I find a book is not holding me, I will stop reading it and go on to the next one – the older I get, the less time I can afford to waste 😃
Thanks for your remark, Robbie. After I read the email from the author, I realized that perhaps I was not being fair. I probably wasn’t the intended audience, nor was the person I bought the book for. While it didn’t fit my needs, I realized it was probably just the right book for someone else. And it did happen that the book had almost all 4 and 5 star reviews so my review would have hurt it on Amazon.
That does make sense, Lisa. I sometimes review books that are not my preferred genre and I also have to try and put myself into the shoes of someone who would love that type of book and be fair.

I suspect most authors have the same problem, Chuck 😎

Thanks Sherrie for the information. I do belong to Goodreads, but did not know about their review program.
