Christmas Words

OK Wordsmiths – Barb has four great links here for you 👍😃

Here’s some posts from the Oxford Dictionary site, starting with the words for Father Christmas from around the world. Have fun with the interactive map:

Twelve Christmas words – it includes a fart so you can spring this on the kids.

And some words that came to life 100 years ago. I don’t believe ice skates are that new.

and here’s my favourite: a timeline of words for drunken. That is a concept that is well embedded in Britain. Our ancestors have been carousing in winter for a very long time. Or maybe it’s so embedded they’ve forgotten, like the ’60s if you remember it you weren’t there. Should have a mythology like the Eskimo’s collection of words for snow.
